Following adjustments to participate in this week’s National Performing Arts Convention in Denver, the Central City Opera returns to its regular schedule in 2009 with three operas playing in repertory from June 27 through Aug. 9.

The season opens with a new production of Donizetti’s bel canto favorite “Lucia di Lammermoor” and continues with Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” and George Frideric Handel’s Italian “Rinaldo,” a story of love and war set in the time of the First Crusade.

The title role in “Lucia” will be sung by Lubova Petrova, a young, Russian-born soprano now among the world’s fastest rising stars.

Sondheim’s Tony-winning musical is the source of the popular song “Send in the Clowns.” It was further the inspiration for Ingmar Bergman’s film “Smiles of a Summer Night.”

It premiered on Broadway in 1973.

Subscriptions for the 2009 season will go on sale this fall, date to be announced. For more information, call 303-292-6700 or visit www.centralcityopera.org.
