Review: La Traviata

Opera North excelled last night, their new production of Verdi’s La Traviata was both lavish and firing on all cylinders, the opera itself is the old story of love and desperate loss.

To say the debut of Ania Jeruc-Kopec as Violetta was a success is an understatement, she was supreme, and any other superlative you can think of. We are now fans and will aim to see any productions she is in.
Other shining performances include Stepehen Gadd as Giorgio who was superb, and Ji-Min Park as Alfredo improved unbelievably as the opera progressed and was visibly touched at the curtain call. The conductor Justin Doyle undoubtedly got the best out of the orchestra and cast.

The opening act saw a debauched party and the whole chorus seemed fully involved in what amounted to an almost orgy. Each act had its highlights and the closing act saw the tragic demise of Violetta which brought an emotional climax to this powerful Opera North production.

If you can don’t miss this new production Friday 27th March 7pm
