According to reports, Konieczny was hurt when the back of an armchair fell off when he collapsed into it and sang until the end of Act two but was in great pain and could not continue. A festival spokesman came out before the curtain to announce the change ahead of the third act.
Bayreuth Festival Confirms Tomasz Konieczny for Opening of ‘Siegfried’ After Accident
By Francisco SalazarThe Bayreuth Festival has confirmed that Polish bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny will perform in the opening night of “Siegfried.”
The company said, “After yesterday’s stage accident, Tomasz Konieczny is on the road to recovery and will sing the Wanderer as planned for tomorrow’s premiere of ‘Siegfried.’ We would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank Michael Kupfer-Radecky, who brilliantly saved yesterday’s performance.”
The news comes after Konieczny was injured badly by a piece of stage furniture while singing Wotan in the opening night of “Walküre.” As a result, he was unable to return for the third act and Michael Kupfer-Radecky jumped in for the finale.
“Siegfried” opens on August 3, 2022.
