Ermonela Jaho, Kristine Opolais, Gianluca Terranova Headline Greek National Opera Fall 2020 Season

Greek National Opera has announced that it will resume artistic activities with full scale live productions from October to December 2020.

The autumn season will open on 11 October at the Stavros Niarchos Hall with Puccini, Giacosa and Illica’s “Madama Butterfly.”

The cast for the opera includes Ermonela Jaho, Cellia Costea, and Kristīne Opolais alternating the role of Cio-Cio-San; Gianluca Terranova and Dimitris Paksoglou alternating in the role of B.F. Pinkerton; Chryssanthi Spitadi as Suzuki; and Dionysios Sourbis and Nikos Kotenidis in the role of Sharpless. Cast will be completed with Nicholas Stefanou, Yannis Kalyvas, Yanni Yannissis, and Dimitris Kassioumis.

Lukas Karytinos will conduct the production by Ugo de Ana.

Performance Dates: Oct. 11- Nov. 22, 2020

A new production of Mozart and Da Ponte’s masterwork “Don Giovanni” will be presented in a co-production of the Greek National Opera with the Göteborg Opera and the Royal Danish Opera.

The opera will feature two casts and will star Tassis Christoyannis and Dionysios Sourbis in the title role; Vassiliki Karayanni will interpret the role of Donna Anna; Yannis Christopoulos and Vassilis Kavayas as Don Ottavio; Petros Magoulas and Alexandros Stavrakakis as Il Commendatore; Anna Stylianaki and Artemis Bogri in the role of Donna Elvira; Tassos Apostolou and Haris Andrianos as Leporello; Nikos Kotenidis and George Mattheakakis in the role of Masetto; and Chrissa Maliamani and Miranda Makrynioti alternating in the role of Zerlina.

Daniel Smith conducts the production by John Fulljames. Sets have been designed by Dick Bird.

Performance Dates: Dec. 11- 29, 2020

Mikis Theodorakis’ “Epitaph and Dionysus” will be performed by soloists Betty Harlafti and Zaharias Karounis. Conductor is Lisa Xanthopoulou. The work will feature an 11-member instrumental ensemble, the vocal ensemble choirs (Epitaph), and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation Chorus (Dionysus).

Performance Dates: September 26 & 27, 2020

David Greig’s “The Events”  is a co-production with the Municipal and Regional Theatres of Corfu, Ioannina, Kozani, Sérres, Crete, Kalamata, Agrinio, Theatre of Thessaly & Ferodo Bridge. Konstantinos Thomaidis will conduct. The work will be performed with the participation of Libro Coro, the GNO Intercultural Chorus, and Rainbow Singers.

Performance Dates: December 10-13, 2020
