The Gothenburg Opera has announced that Henning Ruhe will be its new Artistic Director for Opera and Drama.

He is slated to take up the position on Jan. 1, 2020 and will start full time with the company during that ensuing summer.

Ruhe studied at the University of Music Franz Liszt, where he won a number of awards as a pianist. He went on to study Arts Management and worked in that field with such companies as the Staatsoper Berlin, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, at IMG Artists in New York, and at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He is also Artistic Director of the Munich Opera Festival’s Festspiel Studio for Contemporary Music.

“I am very much looking forward to my new role at Göteborgs Opera,” Ruhe stated in a press release. “This theatre has an international reputation for its colorful and high quality program. The people who work there are very passionate about the art, and the infrastructure of the theatre offers wonderful possibilities for inspiring performances. The position of Artistic Director of Göteborgs Opera gives me the chance to take the best from my experiences in the international opera world onstage and backstage, and to use them to create exciting moments of music theatre together with all my new colleagues.”
