The Central City Opera has announced its 2019 season, which will feature four operas.

Among the four works are two well-known masterpieces and two lesser-known oeuvres. As of this writing, the company has not announced the full dates of the performances of the works. Traditionally, the company reveals more details in the fall with tickets going on sale in the winter months.

The first of the operas to get a showcase is Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” which was last performed at the company back in 2010. Per Sharps & Flatirons, the company will bring back the same production from 2010, though with a different director.

Second on the slate is Benjamin Britten’s “Billy Budd,” which has long been an ambition of general/artistic director Pelham G. Pearce Jr, who reportedly wants to put on all the Britten operas at the company.

The other two works include “La Damoiselle élue” by Debussy and “Litanies à la Vierge noire” by Poulenc, which focus heavily on the female voice. This was actually counter-programming to the all-male cast of “Billy Buddy.”
