Stefan Herheim will direct a new production of “Les Vêpres Siciliennes” at the Metropolitan Opera.

In a recent New York Times interview general manager Peter Gelb noted that Herheim will bring his production of the late Verdi work, which originated in London in 2013. The news comes after Herheim was scheduled to make his Met debut in 2019-20, with a reprise “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” that wowed the Salzburg Festival in 2013. However, the production was canceled.

“I Vespri Sicilianni” made its Met debut in 1967 in a concert performance. It would make its staged debut in an acclaimed production by John Dexter. The production starred Montserrat Caballé and Nicolai Gedda. The opera was last performed in 2004 with Sondra Radvaonvsky, Francisco Casanova, Leo Nucci, Samuel Ramey. The work has never been performed in its original French version at the Met.
