Luzerner Theater Announces New Music Director & Opera Director

The Luzerner Theater has announced the dual appointment of Jonathan Bloxham as its new music director and Dr. Ursula Benzing as its opera director.

Benzing has previously worked with the Staatstheater Kassel for many years. She received the 2021 KULTURpunkt prize for her championing of baroque opera.

Bloxham recently performed “Bluebeard’s Castle” in Lucerne. He has conducted such orchestras as the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, the Belgian National Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

In his new post, Bloxham is set to conduct such operas as “I Capuleti e I Montecchi,” “La Bohème,” and “Dido and Aeneas.”
